We are happy to announce that the Department of Library & Information Science, Central University of Tamil Nadu, Thiruvarur offers admission to PhD (Full-Time/Part-time) under the Exempted / Entrance Exam Category for the Academic Year 2026-2027. 


PhD Seat Vacancy: Full-Time - 08, Part-Time - 04. 
Candidate must have 5 years of service experience for Part-Time PhD.

Eligibility: Candidates willing to appear under Entrance Examination Category may check the detailed eligibility criteria or equivalent in our website PhD-Eligibility-criteria-AY-2026-2027. 

Candidates who have completed:
  • Two year/four semester Master's Degree after a three-year Bachelor Programme, with a minimum of 55% marks aggregate or equivalent grade OR
  • One year/two semester Master's Degree after a four-year Bachelor Programme, with a minimum of 55% marks aggregate or equivalent grade OR
  • Four-year bachelor's degree with a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade OR M.Phil. Degree with 55% of marks or its equivalent grade.
Exempted Category: University shall invite candidates who qualify Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) under UGC/CSIR-NET or any Governmental agencies, or a pass in a national level test such as NET/GATE/CEED, etc., for interview.

Mr. Rachakonda Ganesh Awarded Gold Medal at the 11th Convocation of CUTN

The Department of Library and Information Science, Central University of Tamil Nadu, Thiruvarur, proudly congratulates Mr. Rachakonda Ganesh, a student of the Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) programme (2024-2026 Batch), on being awarded a Gold Medal at the 11th Convocation of the Central University of Tamil Nadu, held on 17 August 2026 at the Multipurpose Hall, CUTN. 
The prestigious convocation was graced by Hon’ble Vice-President of India, Sri C. P. Radhakrishnan, as the Chief Guest. The Gold Medal was conferred upon Mr. Rachakonda Ganesh in recognition of his outstanding academic performance and excellence in the M.L.I.S. programme. DLIS CUTN Organizes Orientation Programme for First-Year PG Students

Dear All, 

We are pleased to inform you that the Department of Library and Information Science, Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUTN), organized a Department-Level Orientation Programme for First-Year PG Students on 22 August 2026 at 9:30 AM in the Department Seminar Hall. The programme was organized to familiarize newly admitted students with the Department, academic requirements, student support facilities, co-curricular opportunities, professional activities, and various avenues available during their postgraduate study. 

The programme commenced with student registration at 9:30 AM, followed by Tamil Thai Vazhthu at 10:07 AM. The orientation session began with a welcome address and an introduction to the Department by Prof. S. Thanuskodi, Head, Department of Library and Information Science. He briefed the students about attendance, CIA and ESE examinations, scholarship provisions, and the mentor–mentee system. He also explained the role of mentors in guiding students in their academic progress, addressing their concerns, and facilitating communication between students and the Department. At 10:32 AM, Prof. Akhandanand Shukla interacted with the students on the Department Newsletter (DLIS CUTN NEWS), Bibliophile, and social media platforms. He explained how these platforms help students remain informed about departmental activities, achievements, and important announcements. He also highlighted the achievements and professional accomplishments of Department alumni, including their placements and career progression, and encouraged students to remain connected with the alumni network. He further emphasized the importance of student participation in conferences, seminars, and workshops for academic exposure, professional networking, and skill development. The students were also introduced to the Department's Special Lecture Series programmes, Anveshan and Gyan Pravah. 

The next session at 10:36 AM was handled by Dr. S. Ravikumar, who provided an overview of the postgraduate programme and course content. He also explained the provisions related to internships and the requirements for PG projects, helping students understand the practical and research-oriented components of their programme. At 10:53 AM, Dr. Anila Sulochana briefed the students about placement avenues and career opportunities available after completing the programme. She emphasized the importance of undertaking MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) to supplement classroom learning and develop additional knowledge and skills in emerging areas. She encouraged students to make use of suitable online courses to enhance their academic competencies, professional skills, and employability. She also explained the rules and regulations governing the Computer Lab and proper use of departmental computing facilities. At 11:01 AM, Dr. V. K. Dhanyasree introduced the students to Student Club Activities and NET Coaching Classes, highlighting opportunities for co-curricular engagement and preparation for competitive examinations such as UGC-NET. 

A feedback session was conducted at 11:12 AM, providing students with an opportunity to share their initial views and responses regarding the orientation programme. The programme concluded with the National Anthem at 11:14 AM, followed by High Tea at 11:15 AM.

Overall, the orientation programme provided first-year PG students with a comprehensive introduction to the Department's academic structure, assessment system, scholarships, internships, PG projects, placement opportunities, computer laboratory facilities, student clubs, NET coaching, departmental communication platforms, alumni engagement, and opportunities for participation in academic events. The programme helped the newly admitted students gain a clear understanding of the academic, professional, and co-curricular opportunities available through the Department of Library and Information Science, CUTN.

Successful Completion of Open Ph.D. Viva-Voce of Ms. Mariam Bhanu M. A., Ph.D. Scholar

Dear All,

We are pleased to inform you that Ms. Mariam Bhanu M. A., Ph.D. Scholar (R191906) of the Department of Library & Information Science, Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUTN), Thiruvarur, successfully defended her Open Ph.D. Viva-Voce Examination held in the Smart Classroom on 12th August 2026, at 02:00 PM. Her doctoral research is titled “Role of Public Libraries in Sustainable Development of the Society in Kerala: A Study.” 

She presented her research work in detail and satisfactorily answered the questions and queries raised by the External Examiner and other participants during the Open Ph.D. Viva-Voce Examination. Dr. Subarna Kumar Das, Professor, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, served as the External Examiner for the examination. Dr. V. K. Dhanyasree, Assistant Professor and Research Supervisor, served as the Convener of the Open Ph.D. Viva-Voce Examination.

The Open Ph.D. Viva-Voce Examination was attended by the RAC members, faculty members, research scholars, postgraduate students, and other members of the academic community. The examination provided an opportunity for academic interaction and discussion on the research findings and their implications for the role of public libraries in sustainable development.

Ms. Anugu Tejaswini Wins Essay Writing Competition on Librarians’ Day 2026

Dear All, 

We are pleased to announce that Ms. Anugu Tejaswini, a student of the M.Lib.I.Sc. (2025–2027 batch), has secured the First Prize in the Essay Writing Competition organized as part of the Librarians’ Day Celebration 2026. The competition was organized by the Department of Library & Information Science, CUTN to commemorate Librarians’ Day and to encourage students to express their ideas, creativity, and perspectives on the changing role and significance of libraries in contemporary society.

The essay competition was conducted on the theme “Beyond the Bookshelves: What a Library Means to Me.” The theme invited participants to reflect on the role of libraries in learning, research, creativity, community engagement, and personal growth. Ms. Anugu Tejaswini distinguished herself through her thoughtful presentation, originality of ideas, and effective articulation of the evolving significance of libraries beyond their traditional role as repositories of books and information. Her achievement reflects her keen interest in the field of Library and Information Science and her ability to engage meaningfully with contemporary perspectives on libraries and librarianship. The winning essay will also be featured in the forthcoming issue of Bibliophile, the departmental newsletter.

Padma Shri Dr. S. R. Ranganathan's 134th Birth Anniversary Celebrated on 15th August 2026

We are delighted to share you that the Department of Library & Information Science, Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUTN), Thiruvarur in association with the Indian Association of Special Libraries and Information Centres (IASLIC), Kolkata (Zone 1), organized a national webinar to commemorate National Librarians’ Day 2026 on 15 August 2026 at 4:00 PM via Google Meet. The webinar was organized on the theme “Library and Information Science Education in India at Crossroads.” The programme was presided over by Prof. S. Thanuskodi, Head, Department of Library and Information Science, CUTN, and coordinated by Dr. K. G. Sudhier, Vice President, IASLIC.

The eminent speaker, Prof. N. Laxman Rao, UGC Emeritus Fellow and Former Head, Department of Library and Information Science, Osmania University, Hyderabad, delivered the keynote address. He discussed major issues and emerging needs in Library and Information Science (LIS) education, with particular emphasis on curriculum reform, digital integration, faculty development, industry collaboration, open access, continuing professional development, employability, and research orientation. Following the keynote address, Prof. P. G. Tadasad, Department of Library and Information Science, Karnataka State Akkamahadevi Women’s University, Vijayapura; Dr. K. P. Vijayakumar, Former Head, Department of Library and Information Science, University of Kerala; and Dr. S. Ravi Kumar, Associate Professor, Department of Library and Information Science, CUTN, shared their views, observations, and suggestions on the theme. 




The webinar concluded with the concluding remarks by Prof. Akhandanand Shukla, Department of Library and Information Science, CUTN. Dr. S. Ravi Kumar, Associate Professor, Department of Library and Information Science, CUTN, proposed the formal vote of thanks and expressed gratitude to the keynote speaker, dignitaries, organizers, and participants for their valuable contributions and active participation.

Overall, the webinar was an informative and meaningful academic programme that provided a valuable platform for discussing the present challenges and future directions of Library and Information Science education in India. The deliberations emphasized the need to continuously adapt LIS education to technological advancements, evolving professional requirements, employability needs, and the rapidly changing information environment.

National Librarian’s Day 2026 Celebrated at DLIS, Central University of Tamil Nadu

We are delighted to inform you that the Department of Library and Information Science, Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUTN), celebrated National Librarian’s Day 2026 on 12 August 2026 at the Choza Central Library Hall, CUTN, with great enthusiasm and academic fervour. The programme commenced at 10:30 AM and was attended by faculty members, students, invited dignitaries, and members of the university library community. The programme began with a formal welcome to the distinguished guests. The gathering was honoured by the presence of Prof. E. M. Shankar, Dean of Research, CUTN, and Prof. B. Radha, Dean, School of Communication, CUTN, as the Guests of Honour. Respected faculty members, Dr. K. G. Sudhier, Departmental Programme Coordinator, and students were also present on the occasion.

The Welcome Address was delivered by Dr. S. Ravi Kumar, Associate Professor, CUTN, who warmly welcomed the dignitaries, faculty members, students, and the entire gathering. This was followed by the Presidential Address by Prof. S. Thanuskodi, Head, Department of Library and Information Science. In his address, he highlighted the significant role of libraries and librarians in supporting education and research, facilitating knowledge creation and dissemination, and contributing to the intellectual development of society. The programme then proceeded with the Librarian’s Day Special Talk, delivered by Dr. R. Parameswaran, Librarian, Choza Central Library, CUTN. The Guests of Honour, Prof. E. M. Shankar and Prof. B. Radha, subsequently addressed the gathering and shared their valuable thoughts on the importance of libraries and librarianship, as well as the role of learning and knowledge dissemination in contemporary society. Their insightful messages added academic significance to the celebration. 

One of the most memorable moments of the programme was the release of the Department Newsletter, Bibliophile, Volume 8, Issue 1, June 2026. The newsletter was released in the presence of the distinguished guests and faculty members. The occasion was particularly significant with the participation of the Guests of Honour, Faculty Editor Dr. K. G. Sudhier, and Student Editor Anugu Tejaswini. The release marked another important contribution to the academic and creative activities of the Department of Library and Information Science. The celebration was followed by the Prize Distribution Ceremony. As part of the National Librarian’s Day celebrations, the Department had organised competitions for students, including an Essay Writing Competition on the theme “Beyond the Bookshelves: What a Library Means to Me” and a Poster Making Competition on the theme “Library 2030.” The winners of the competitions were felicitated and presented with their prizes by the Guests of Honour. The ceremony provided an encouraging and memorable experience for the participating students and recognised their creativity and engagement with the theme of librarianship. The programme concluded with the Vote of Thanks delivered by Hari Krishnan S. N., Department Representative, Second Year MLIS. He expressed sincere gratitude to the dignitaries, Head of the Department, faculty members, programme coordinators, students, and all those who contributed to the successful organisation of the celebration.


The National Librarian’s Day 2026 celebration was a meaningful and memorable occasion that brought together the academic community of the Department of Library and Information Science to recognise and celebrate the invaluable role of libraries and librarians. The programme concluded on a positive and celebratory note, leaving the participants with a renewed appreciation for the enduring significance of libraries in fostering knowledge, learning, research, and the intellectual development of society.

Successful Completion of Open Ph.D. Viva-Voce of Ms. Rima Hazarika, Ph.D. Scholar

We are pleased to inform you that Ms. Rima Hazarika, Ph.D. scholar in the Department, successfully defended her Open Ph.D. Viva-Voce Examination held in the Smart Classroom on 5th August 2026, at 11:00 AM. Her doctoral thesis was titled "Mapping the Open Access Landscape of State and Central Universities in North-East India: Insights from OpenAlex".

She presented her research work in brief and satisfactorily answered the queries raised during the Open Ph.D. Viva-Voce Examination. Prof. Sadanand Y. Bansode, Senior Professor & Dean, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune, served as the External Examiner. Open Ph.D. defence was attended by 85 attendees, including 55 participants in person and 30 participants online. Dr. K. G. Sudhier, Assistant Professor and Research Supervisor, served as the Convener of the Open Ph.D. Viva-Voce Examination. The RAC Members Prof. Akhandanand Shukla, DLIS, CUTN and Prof. T. J. Librarians' Day Celebration with Essay Writing and Poster Making Competitions

Dear All,

We are delighted to share that the Department of Library and Information Science, Central University of Tamil Nadu, Thiruvarur, is celebrating Librarians' Day on 12 August 2026 by organizing two student competitions—an Essay Writing Competition and a Poster Making Competition—to encourage creativity, critical thinking, and awareness of the evolving role of libraries and librarians.


The Essay Writing Competition is based on the theme "Beyond the Bookshelves: What a Library Means to Me." Participants are invited to submit an original essay in English (800–1,200 words) reflecting their personal experiences, observations, or perspectives on libraries and their role in learning, research, creativity, community engagement, and personal growth. The competition is open to all undergraduate, postgraduate, and research scholars of the University.

The Poster Making Competition will focus on the theme "Library 2030." Participants are invited to creatively illustrate their vision of future libraries by highlighting innovation, technology, sustainability, accessibility, lifelong learning, community engagement, and the evolving role of libraries and librarians. Both digital and hand-made posters are accepted, provided they are original and comply with the prescribed guidelines.

Entries for both competitions must be submitted on or before 10 August 2026. Essay submissions should be in Microsoft Word or PDF format, while digital posters should be submitted in PDF, PNG, or JPEG format. Hand-made posters (A3 size) may be submitted directly to the Department.

The winners of both competitions will receive Certificates and Mementos during the Librarians' Day celebration on 12 August 2026. In addition, the winning essay will be published in the next issue of Bibliophile, the departmental newsletter, and all poster entries will be displayed during the celebration.

The Department cordially invites all eligible students of CUTN to participate in these competitions and celebrate the spirit of libraries, knowledge, and lifelong learning through these engaging academic and creative activities.

This is to inform you that Department of Library & Information Science, Central University of Tamil Nadu, Thiruvarur offers spot admission to 2-year integrated Master of Library & Information Science (M. Lib. & I. Sc.) for the academic year 2026-2027. Graduates of any discipline fulfilling minimum eligibility criteria may apply. Participation in Symposium on Artificial Intelligence by Prof. Akhandanand Shukla

"Alvida" to MLIS Final Year

Dear All, 

We are delighted to inform you that the 2nd Semester MLIS students of the Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS), Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUTN), organized a heartfelt farewell programme for the outgoing 2024–26 batch under the theme “Alvida.” The event was held on 20 May 2026 from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM and turned out to be a joyful, emotional, and memorable occasion attended by faculty members, PhD scholars, juniors, and seniors. 

The venue was beautifully decorated with balloons, paper crafts, and photographs reflecting the memorable moments shared within the department. The programme commenced with a welcome address delivered by Ms. Anuvinda J. R. on behalf of the 2nd Semester students, expressing gratitude to the seniors for their support, guidance, and encouragement throughout the academic journey. 

Prof. S. Thanuskodi, Head of the Department and faculty members addressed the gathering and conveyed their best wishes to the outgoing students for their future careers and higher studies. Their inspiring words motivated everyone and added significance to the occasion. One of the major attractions of the event was the title distribution ceremony, where creative and respectful titles were awarded to the seniors based on their personalities and talents. Cultural performances, including dances, songs, games, and other fun-filled activities, added excitement and entertainment to the celebration. A memory-sharing session provided an opportunity for the seniors to express their feelings and share memorable experiences from their time in the department. 

The programme also included a group photography session to preserve the joyful memories of the occasion. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Hari Krishnan S. N. on behalf of the 2nd Semester students. The farewell celebration became a memorable occasion filled with happiness, emotions, friendship, and togetherness, further strengthening the bond between juniors and seniors.
