DLIS CUTN Organizes Orientation Programme for First-Year PG Students

We are pleased to inform you that the Department of Library and Information Science, Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUTN), organized a Department-Level Orientation Programme for First-Year PG Students on 22 August 2026 at 9:30 AM in the Department Seminar Hall. The programme was organized to familiarize newly admitted students with the Department, academic requirements, student support facilities, co-curricular opportunities, professional activities, and various avenues available during their postgraduate study. 

The programme commenced with student registration at 9:30 AM, followed by Tamil Thai Vazhthu at 10:07 AM. The orientation session began with a welcome address and an introduction to the Department by Prof. S. Thanuskodi, Head, Department of Library and Information Science. He briefed the students about attendance, CIA and ESE examinations, scholarship provisions, and the mentor–mentee system. He also explained the role of mentors in guiding students in their academic progress, addressing their concerns, and facilitating communication between students and the Department. At 10:32 AM, Prof. Akhandanand Shukla interacted with the students on the Department Newsletter (DLIS CUTN NEWS), Bibliophile, and social media platforms. He explained how these platforms help students remain informed about departmental activities, achievements, and important announcements. He also highlighted the achievements and professional accomplishments of Department alumni, including their placements and career progression, and encouraged students to remain connected with the alumni network. He further emphasized the importance of student participation in conferences, seminars, and workshops for academic exposure, professional networking, and skill development. The students were also introduced to the Department's Special Lecture Series programmes, Anveshan and Gyan Pravah. 

The next session at 10:36 AM was handled by Dr. S. Ravikumar, who provided an overview of the postgraduate programme and course content. He also explained the provisions related to internships and the requirements for PG projects, helping students understand the practical and research-oriented components of their programme. At 10:53 AM, Dr. Anila Sulochana briefed the students about placement avenues and career opportunities available after completing the programme. She emphasized the importance of undertaking MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) to supplement classroom learning and develop additional knowledge and skills in emerging areas. She encouraged students to make use of suitable online courses to enhance their academic competencies, professional skills, and employability. She also explained the rules and regulations governing the Computer Lab and proper use of departmental computing facilities. At 11:01 AM, Dr. V. K. Dhanyasree introduced the students to Student Club Activities and NET Coaching Classes, highlighting opportunities for co-curricular engagement and preparation for competitive examinations such as UGC-NET. 

A feedback session was conducted at 11:12 AM, providing students with an opportunity to share their initial views and responses regarding the orientation programme. The programme concluded with the National Anthem at 11:14 AM, followed by High Tea at 11:15 AM.

Overall, the orientation programme provided first-year PG students with a comprehensive introduction to the Department's academic structure, assessment system, scholarships, internships, PG projects, placement opportunities, computer laboratory facilities, student clubs, NET coaching, departmental communication platforms, alumni engagement, and opportunities for participation in academic events. The programme helped the newly admitted students gain a clear understanding of the academic, professional, and co-curricular opportunities available through the Department of Library and Information Science, CUTN.
