Dear All,

This is to inform you that Department of Library and Information Science, Central University of Tamil Nadu has organised a special online lecture series Anveshan: Online Lecture Series in LIS for Research Scholars. The fifth online lecture in the series was organised on 6th May, 2021 (Thursday) at 3:00 PM through Google Meet. Dr. K. P. Vijayakumar, Former Head, Department of Library and Information Science, University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram has been invited as resource person and he delivered a lecture on "Selection of a Topic for Research".

The program commenced with a welcome address given by Dr. Akhandanand Shukla, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Library and Information Science, CUTN Thiruvarur followed by a brief introduction about the resource person.

Dr. K. P. Vijayakumar started his talk with a short introduction of research including major steps involved in a research. According to him, research should be based on creativity and innovation, which means doing something in a different fashion, at the same time creatively. Selection of a research topic is a prominent issue in academia and it is the first step in the research journey. First, he corrected the confusion that everyone has, which is related to the difference between topic and subject with a suitable example. Then he pointed out some factors to be considered compulsorily while selecting a research problem i.e. supervisor as well as the researcher should have interest in the topic selected, topic should be appropriate to the discipline, scale should be moderate (neither be too broad nor be narrow), measurement of concepts should be clear, topic should be relevant, data should be available, ethical issues should be considered etc. In addition, he gave some suggestions on how to convert research ideas into research topic. At the end of his lecture, he shed light on major general sources, journals, databases and some other collections of LIS dissertations and thesis that research scholars can consult to identify potential areas of research in LIS.

The lecture was coordinated by Dr. V. K. Dhanyasree, Assistant Professor, Department of Library and Information Science, Central University of Tamil Nadu, Thiruvarur and attended by 77 participants. At the end, Dr. K. G. Sudhier, Assistant Professor of the department, shared his views about the talk. The lecture session ended with a formal vote of thanks proposed by Dr. V. K. Dhanyasree.
